Here's something worth knowing before you shop: "senior dog food" has no legal definition. There's no regulation behind the word, so the label alone tells you very little — what matters is whether a food matches what your particular older dog needs. Many healthy seniors do perfectly well staying on a quality adult food.

The needs that do change with age are specific. Protein should stay up, not down — older dogs lose muscle more easily, and veterinary nutritionists now favor as much or slightly more high-quality protein for healthy seniors (low-protein "senior" formulas can make muscle loss worse). Calories usually need adjusting — down for the dog who's slowed and softened, up for the older dog who's getting thin. Omega-3 fatty acids earn their keep for aging joints and skin, and for dogs showing cognitive changes, specific therapeutic diets with MCTs and antioxidant blends have real trial evidence behind them.
