Fish has a reputation as the gentle, hypoallergenic choice for cats. The evidence points the other way: it is the second most commonly reported feline food allergen, at around 17% of cases, just behind beef at 18% and well ahead of chicken at 5%.
The contrast with dogs is striking. Fish causes only about 2% of canine food allergies — so advice that holds for dogs does not transfer to cats here. The likeliest explanation is simple exposure: fish is in an enormous proportion of cat food, including a great many "sensitive stomach" and "limited ingredient" formulas, so most cats have eaten a lot of it.
That also means fish is rarely a novel protein for a cat, which matters if you are choosing an elimination diet. The foods below exclude fish in all its forms — including salmon, tuna, whitefish, herring and fish oil derivatives.
What to Look For
Check named species, not just "fish"
Salmon, tuna, whitefish, herring, cod and anchovy are all fish. A food listing salmon rather than fish is not fish-free.
Fish oil is usually fine, but not during a trial
Highly refined fish oil carries little protein and is often tolerated. For a diagnostic elimination trial it is still cleaner to exclude it and reintroduce later.
Rabbit, duck or venison
These are more likely to be genuinely new to a cat than fish or chicken, which makes an elimination trial worth running.
Do not assume "sensitive" means fish-free
A large share of sensitive-stomach and limited-ingredient cat foods are built on fish precisely because of its gentle reputation.

We started with the 2,687 cat foods in our database and removed every food whose ingredient list contains any of these 25 terms, each matched anywhere inside an ingredient name: fish, salmon, tuna, cod, herring, anchov, mackerel, trout, sardine, pollock, haddock, halibut, tilapia, menhaden, capelin, smelt, shrimp, krill, crab, clam, mussel, oyster, scallop, squid, lobster, using the same filter engine as our Food Navigator. That left 538 matching foods. The 100 highest-rated matches are shown below, ordered by average customer rating. No brand pays for placement. The allergy-risk score estimates how likely each food is to contain common allergy triggers, so you can weigh it alongside ingredients and price.
