This list is built for one specific job: finding a trial diet, the single food you feed exclusively during an elimination trial, which remains the only reliable way to confirm what your cat reacts to. The foods below are drawn from our database on trial-diet criteria: limited-ingredient recipes built on genuinely novel proteins.

Choose the protein deliberately, and be suspicious of fish. Across reviewed cases, beef accounted for 18% and fish for 17% of feline reactions, with chicken at 5%. In dogs, fish causes only about 2%. So the intuition that fish is a gentle, hypoallergenic choice is close to backwards for cats: a fish-based "sensitive" formula may contain one of the two proteins most likely to be the problem. A genuinely novel protein for most cats is rabbit, venison or duck.

What to Look For

Check whether fish is really novel

Fish causes around 17% of feline food reactions and appears in a huge proportion of cat food, including many "sensitive" formulas. For most cats it is a familiar protein, not a novel one.

One protein the cat has not eaten

Rabbit, venison or duck are more genuinely novel for most cats than fish or chicken. The point of the trial is exposure the immune system has not seen.

Or a hydrolysed protein

Hydrolysed diets break protein into fragments too small to trigger a reaction. Extensively hydrolysed formulas (under 3 kDa) are less likely to provoke signs than partially hydrolysed ones.

Nothing else, including treats and flavoured medication

Cats are efficient scavengers and multi-cat homes make exclusivity hard. Shared bowls, treats and flavoured medications all invalidate the trial.
