Wheat-Free Dog Foods

Wheat accounts for about 13% of reported food allergies in dogs — real, but well behind the animal proteins that dominate the list. It is the most commonly implicated grain, which is why it is worth isolating rather than cutting grains wholesale.

That distinction matters. Wheat-free is not grain-free, and for most dogs it is the more sensible target. A wheat-free food can still contain rice, oats or barley, which are rarely implicated — rice appears in only around 2% of cases. Removing every grain to avoid one is a much bigger change than the evidence calls for.

It is also worth being honest about the odds. If your dog is itching, an animal protein is a more likely culprit than wheat: beef alone accounts for 34% of cases, more than twice wheat's share. Removing wheat while keeping the same beef or chicken protein often changes nothing.
