Urinary problems are among the most common reasons cats see a vet — straining in the litter box, bloody urine, or peeing outside the box. Diet plays a central, well-proven role against crystals and stones. One honest caveat: for feline idiopathic cystitis (the most common cause of urinary signs), no food is proven to reduce how often it happens — moisture and stress management help control it, but they aren't a cure.

The biggest dietary lever, by consensus, is water. Dilute urine keeps minerals from concentrating into crystals, and the veterinary consensus recommendation is high-moisture food (wet food is over 75% water) plus every trick that gets a cat drinking — fountains, extra bowls, water stirred into meals. Urinary formulas add controlled minerals and target urine pH to make struvite crystals less likely; prescription versions can actually dissolve struvite stones under veterinary supervision. (Calcium oxalate stones can't be dissolved by any diet — those are about preventing the next one.)
