Dairy-Free Dog Foods

Dairy is the second most commonly reported food allergen in dogs, behind only beef, at around 17% of cases. It frequently occurs alongside beef allergy, which is why removing both together is a common starting point.

The part that trips people up is that the allergens are casein and whey — the proteins in milk — not lactose. Lactose intolerance is a separate, non-immune problem that causes loose stools rather than itching. So a food can be free of obvious dairy and still contain whey or casein further down the list, and that is enough to keep an allergic dog reacting.

The foods below exclude milk, cheese, whey, casein and yogurt. That filter is deliberately broader than just milk and cheese, because a list built on those two alone still contains foods carrying the actual allergenic proteins. One known imprecision: it also excludes some foods containing coconut milk, which is not dairy.
