Two things about "senior cat food" that the bag won't tell you. First, the label is close to meaningless: when researchers compared dozens of senior and adult cat formulas, the only consistent difference was fiber — senior diets weren't lower in phosphorus despite kidney disease being the signature disease of aging cats, and their calorie content was all over the map. There's no data-based standard behind the word.

Second, feline aging bends the opposite way from dogs late in life. Cats of roughly 7–11 often do need fewer calories as they slow down — but cats past about 12 tend to need more: energy requirements rise, digestion grows less efficient, and the classic very-senior cat is thin, not fat. For those cats the right food is calorie-dense, highly digestible, and rich in quality protein, offered in small frequent meals. Feed the body condition in front of you, not the birth year.

And the non-negotiable: unexplained weight loss in an older cat is a disease flag, never normal aging — kidney disease and hyperthyroidism top the list, both caught with routine senior bloodwork and both very manageable.
